Hardly any Sheffield street parties planned for Royal Wedding

There's been just two applications for street parties in Sheffield to celebrate the forthcoming Royal Wedding.

Den Bank Crescent and Lydgate Court, both in Crosspool, are the only places to ask Sheffield Council for licences to hold street parties on Saturday.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials don’t seem to have had the same celebratory effect as William and Kate’s wedding in 2011 which saw 31 street parties in Sheffield.

The nation did get an extra bank holiday for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding - and Harry and Meghan’s big day also clashes with the FA Cup Final.

Andrew Coombe, who is Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, said people were still excited about the wedding but were celebrating in different ways.

“Everybody I speak to is full of enthusiasm and very excited,” he said. “The Royal Wedding tickets we were able to allocate created a huge amount of interest. Prince Harry is very popular and is marrying an extraordinary girl.

“I think people are probably watching the wedding in a different way this time. It’s Cup Final day as well so I imagine quite a few people will sit at home and watch the wedding then the football.

“I don’t think the feeling is any less than when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were married, people are just celebrating in a different way. The support and enthusiasm is still as great.”

Mr Coombe will be attending a civil service in Rotherham during the Royal Wedding but says he will be watching the highlights later.
