Rotherham-born Foreign Secretary William Hague says ‘lessons have been learned’ from the Iraq war – but that the Government is right to help Syrian rebels.

Mr Hague said the UK will continue to supply the Syrian National Coalition, which represents groups fighting President Assad’s forces, with non-lethal equipment.

The move is despite MPs voting against joining the US in air strikes against the dictator. Mr Hague recognised there was ‘a lot of public unease about intervention’ and said the Government was not ‘gung-ho’ about military action.
