Gurkhas’ link with college

Doncaster’s Gurkha community came together for an evening of music and dance to celebrate their New Year.

More than 150 met at Doncaster College for the Deaf to honour the annual festivity, with guests in traditional costumes welcomed by Khum Ale, chairman of the British Gurkha Community.

It was the sixth time the community has chosen to hold an event at the Leger Way college because of its welcoming environment and facilities.

Bobbie Roberts, chair of Doncaster Deaf Trust, said: “It was an honour that the Trust was able to play host once again to people who have historically fought for and been prepared to die for our country and its people. To see them celebrate their history and tradition was a truly wonderful spectacle.”

During the evening Mr Khum Ale presented Mrs Roberts with a surprise donation of £350 for their Chelsea Flower Show fund.
