The incident happened just hours before crooks carried out four ram-raids in the early hours of this morning.
The first happened at the Texaco petrol station on Burncross Road, Chapeltown, at just before 2.45am.
Criminals involved smashed their way into the garage through the shutters and escaped with cash and cigarettes.

In addition, they are believed to have struck at the Screwfix store on Rawson Spring Road, Hillsborough, overnight.
The shutters were damaged in the raid but those involved failed to gain entry.
Detectives say the incidents in Chapeltown, Hillsborough and Stocksbridge are linked.
It is not yet known whether the Screwfix raid or the armed robbery in Base Green is thought to be connected to these.
