Gritters out to combat frost

AROUNG 200 tonnes of salt was spread on Sheffield’s roads last night in one of the biggest gritting operations of the season so far.

Freezing temperatures were forecast on high ground overnight so Amey, the Streets Ahead contractor, sent crews out to deliver precautionary gritting.

A spokeswoman for Amey said: “Some 20 gritters worked through the night to disperse around 200 tonnes of grit. All operations are to be completed before the morning’s peak travel period.”

She added: “Although Amey delivers a robust winter service, we cannot guarantee that even treated roads will be ice-free. We would therefore urge motorists to plan their journeys in advance, leave plenty of time to reach their destination and drive according to the prevailing weather conditions.”
