Greyhound which escaped before Sheffield race will be home for Christmas

A greyhound which escaped from Owlerton Stadium moments before her race will be home for Christmas – following nine long days on the run.

Sizzling Girl bolted from the traps as she was due to compete in the first race on Friday, December 11.

Staff at Owlerton said she managed to escape the stadium via a hole in the fence, which had been caused by vandals the same day.

Racing was held up for over an hour while stadium staff searched for the pup.

Since her escape, dedicated teams had been hunting for her in nearby woodland every single day.

But around 3.20pm on Sunday, volunteers with Greyhound Rescue South Yorkshire found the pup in Shirecliffe Woods.

John Gilburn, managing director at Owlerton, said Sizzling Girl had lost around six kilograms since escaping.

He said: “She had lost a some weight, which is understandable, but that aside she was right as rain.”

He said she devoured a lot of chicken, had a good was and lots of sleep after going home.

John said: “We are all relieved and extremely happy. It is the perfect outcome – I’m so pleased she will be home for Christmas.

“I would like to thank everyone who has searched for her. There have been teams of people out there looking for her in bad weather.”

Trainer Lisa Stevenson said: “It’s absolutely brilliant she’s been found – an early Christmas present.”
