A former builder’s workshop can be converted into a block of bedsits, planners have decided, though they had to make a site visit before offering approval because of concerns over car parking.

The building can now be converted to provide five bedrooms and other communal accommodation near the centre of Wombwell, Barnsley.

Councillors who sit on the planning board were worried about the impact of so many residents on car parking in the area, because the Melville Street address is heavily double yellow lined.

However, after a visit they have accepted the proposal, which has been reduced from an original suggestion of providing six bedrooms.

The street has been blocked to through traffic, to prevent ‘rat running’ and planners have asked the council’s highways department to look at potential ways of providing more parking space around the turning head which now exists there.

Meanwhile, planning permission has also been granted for a former allotment site off Laxton Road in Athersley, which had fallen out of use.

The site had previously been owned by Barnsley Council but is now in private hands and councillors approved plans to put six semi-detached homes on the plot.
