LIBERAL Democrat councillors are calling on Sheffield Council to scrap plans to destroy 30,000 green bins.

The politicians, backed by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, are planning to force a vote on the issue at a meeting of Sheffield’s Full Council next Wednesday.

They claim Labour wants to destroy 30,000 green bins - worth £20 each - which were introduced in the south east of the city as part of a pilot scheme to collect green waste.

Now the Lib Dems are calling for a ‘charged for’ green bin service to be offered across the city at no cost to the taxpayer.

The move follows the decision of Labour councillors to end the free collection of green bins and introduce a £57.60 annual charge for the service.

Mr Clegg said: “There is no sensible reason why the green bin service should not be offered to other local residents.

“For the Labour Council to destroy assets worth £600,000 without a second thought smacks of environmental vandalism.

“Many residents would gladly use the service, even with the charge that Labour introduced.”
