CONTRACTOR Veolia has defended its decision to increase charges for garden waste collections in Sheffield - because it is now able to offer the service city-wide.
The company, which is putting up the subscription fee from £57.60 to £60, said it is expanding the green bin service to cover all of Sheffield.
A Veolia spokeswoman said: “We have increased five-fold the coverage of our paid-for garden waste service which previously was only available to 45,000 households.
“Residents can subscribe to the service for £60 and will receive fortnightly collections between May and November.
“Alternatively, residents can join part way through the collection year at a reduced cost. Garden waste can also be taken to any of the city’s five waste recycling centres free or composted at home.”
