KEEN golfers went out swinging to raise more than £2,500 for South Yorkshire charities.

The Wortley Golf Club charity day was at one time an established annual feature.

After several fallow years, when the event did not take place, member David Cross has revived the event, to great acclaim.

“It was a brilliant day, with 136 golfers in 34 teams. We were really helped by the weather - it was glorious.

“We raised £2,500 for charities, including Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Barnsley Hospice and Yorkshire Cancer, raised £1,000 for the club and gave away £1,000 in prizes.

“We were helped with sponsorship from Sheffield Lexus, the Fairway Hotel in Barnsley and Cross Steels Ltd in Barnsley. We’ll definitely be putting it on next year.”

Bluebell Wood chief executive Sarah Champion said: “Without the support of groups such as Wortley Golf Club, we simply wouldn’t be able to help as many families.”
