Grassroots 'legends' from Sheffield honoured during day of 'laughter and smiles'

Two 'legends' of grassroots football in Sheffield who died before their time were honoured in the only way fitting.

Kasabian Newton-Smith and Craig Crapper were both stalwarts of Southey Wolves FC, which the latter founded in 2010, and they struck up a touching friendship which bridged the generations.

Kasabian died aged eight in December 2016 after losing a long battle with cancer; and Craig, who had severe diabetes, passed away in May this year, aged 57.

The celebration of the duo's lives and their contribution to the game continued that afternoon with a charity fun day, for which friends and family were among up to 200 people who packed out The Staffordshire Arms in Burngreave.

The event raised £2,215, which will be split equally between the football clubs and two charities close to the families' hearts: Diabetes UK and PACT, which supports the families of children with cancer.

"We're grateful to everyone who attended and helped us raise such a great total, and we're looking to make this an annual event."
