Grant will mean a warmer welcome

A Sheffield community centre has received £40,000 from The Veolia Environmental Trust to fund vital improvements.

The Manor Church and Community Project received the grant through the Landfill Communities Fund to pay for the installation of a new heating system, and double-glazed windows in the Temple Park Community Centre, on Harborough Avenue.

A spokesman for the community centre said: “Opened in the 1950s, the building suffers from an old inefficient heating system and single glazed metal framed windows. The heating system and new windows will improve the popular and well-used venue, benefiting existing and future users.”

The grant is one of 27 awarded by the board to community and environmental projects in England, with a grant total of over £860,000. Since 1997, the Trust has awarded over £4.2m to 134 projects in South Yorkshire. The Trust will now work with the organisation to finalise the project’s details, including its start dates, so that it can begin work as soon as possible.

Simon Loveitt, of the Manor Church and Community Project, said: “The Temple Park Centre is situated in the heart of a community with a population of 15,000 people.

“It is the only large community building in the area and this work will mean it will become a warmer and more inviting space for current and future users.”

Paul Taylor, executive director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, said: “The team at the centre must be congratulated on securing this grant. We considered a record number of compliant applications during this round, so this project managed to succeed in a very competitive environment. We look forward to seeing work start.”
