Grace Sachdeva wins three titles as Sheffield players achieve a whitewash in the Yorkshire U12 badminton championships

Sheffield players dominated the Yorkshire Badminton Association Under 12 Championships at Yor winning all five events, finishing runners-up in four and losing semi-finalists in a further four.

Grace Sachdeva (Lydgate Junior) who is still in the under 11 age group was the most successful with three titles and Hugh Simpson (Dobcroft Junior) won two.

Group winners and runners-up in all the events qualified for play-offs. Grace beat Sia Pandit (Leeds) 21-6 in the girls singles final and with Angie Zhu (Middlesbrough) won the girls doubles with a 21-8 victory over Molly Whittaker (Leeds) and Sia in the final of that event. Grace and Hugh beat George Camp (Ecclesall Junior) and Lauren Robinson (Beverley) in the mixed doubles semis and went on to win the event defeating Sumedh Chittamuru (Pontefract) and Sia 21-11 in the final. Sumedh and Sia had beaten Leo Crosby (Dobcroft Junior) and Molly in the other semi-final.

All the semi-finalists in the boys singles were from Sheffield. Hugh beat Joren Lunn and George beat Leo before George won a closely contested final against Hugh 23-21 to take the title.

The same four boys contested the doubles final which resulted in a 21-10 victory for George and Hugh over Leo and Joren.

‘B’ competitions for non-county players were held in the singles in which both the runners-up were from Sheffield, Ethan Fox (Dore Primary) in the boys and Isabella Hall (Loxley Primary) in the girls events.
