‘Government should hand more power to regions’

Sheffield’s council leader has joined others from across England in calling for more joint working between UK cities.

The Core Cities Group – made up of the leaders of eight major local authorities, including Sheffield Council’s Coun Julie Dore – has argued devolving more powers to cities would enable them to help drive the UK economy forward.

The leaders said this would be a more radical constitutional change than separating Scotland from the rest of the country.

They said: “While the question of independence is one for the people of Scotland, we need to add our voices to those who believe devolving more power to cities to let them create jobs and grow their economies is a more radical constitutional agenda than establishing a border at Carlisle.”
