Going...going...gone! Grosvenor House Hotel finally comes down

A pile of rubble under a bare patch of sky is all the remains of a once-iconic Sheffield hotel.

The Star’s images editor Marisa Cashill captured the demolition machines eating away at the tower over several weeks, razing a dominant feature of the Sheffield skyline for decades to the ground.

The work has captured the city’s attention, with crowds gathering every day to watch the hotel come down.

The Grosvenor was once the place to be seen in Sheffield, and hosted top snooker players when the World Championships came to The Crucible.

It was also used by famous footballers when their teams where in the city to play FA Cup semi finals

It was the scene of thousands of wedding receptions and parties, and its walls would no doubt have had some colourful stories to tell if they could talk.

But it has now disappeared to make way for the first phase of Sheffield Retail Quarter. A six storey office block, the new home of HSCB in the city, will be surrounded by shops on the ground level.

Work is also taking place to turn Charter Square into a new pedestrianised square.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council said: “The demolition of the Grosvenor has certainly captured people’s attention and imagination over the past few months and people have been sharing images and memories across social media.

“The demolition is now in its final stages and, once completed, work can then commence on phase one of Sheffield Retail Quarter. HSBC has already been confirmed as the anchor tenant.”

A planning application for the second phase, which should include a new department store, is expected later this year.
