LOVE ’em or hate em, Sheffield’s Park Hill fla ts are marking their fiftieth anniversary.
Developer Urban Splash, in charge of the mammoth redevelopment of the complex, is celebrating the event by switching on new neon lighting to illuminate a graffitied message “I Love You Will U Marry Me”, on the famous bridge between two blocks.
The message has become an iconic image of Park Hill over the years. Urban Splash said it aimed to ‘recognise the heritage and romance attached to the message by preserving the markings with a permanent neon light display’.
A BBC Radio 4 documentary aiming to get to the bottom of who wrote the message has been produced by freelance journalist Frances Brynes and is expected to air later this summer. The message has become iconic and was worn on a T-shirt by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner at a gig. Work on the redevelopment is continuing with the first phase, overlooking Park Square, nearly complete.
Four show apartments, each differently-themed, are being unveiled to the public in September.
