Sheffield Wednesday skipper Glenn Loovens has not been offered a new contract and could play his last game for the club this weekend.

The 34 year old Dutchman is one of three Owls players who will be released at the end of the season - Ross Wallace and goalkeeper Jake Kean the other two.

Loovens hasn't played for Wednesday since the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich on March 6, with manager Jos Luhukay opting for Frederico Venancio, Tom Lees and Daniel Pudil as his preferred central defensive trio.

However, owls fan will be hoping he will be in the squad on Sunday for the final match of this season when Norwich come to Hillsborough, so that the captain can be given the send off he deserves,

The popular defender was a hugely influential figure under Stuart Gray, helping the team equal the record for the number of clean sheets kept in one season, in 2014/15, which had been set by Jack Charlton's side in 1978/79.

Loovens continued to play a crucial role in the squad under Carlos Carvalhal, who had described the twice-capped Holland international as 'the best captain I ever worked with.'

He led out the Owls at Wembley in 2016, as Wednesday lost to Hull City in the Play-Off Final and year later the side made it through to the play-offs again, this time beaten in the semi-finals by Huddersfield Town.

This season, though, Loovens suffered from a lack of form and fitness and made just 22 appearances in total, with two red cards coming his way, one against Derby County after just five minutes and the other in the derby with Shefffield United at Bramall Lane.

In recent weeks he has fallen out of favour under Luhukay, with young defender Jordan Thorniley often chosen instead and it became inevitable that Loovens time at Hillsborough would soon end.
