Give a horse a carrot appeal

Albert’s Horse Sanctaury, in Cawthorne, Barnsley, is entirely self-funded and run by the Hepworth family, who started it in 2005 to care for local unwanted horses that might otherwise face being put down. They have also taken on a handful of donkeys, pigs and sheep.

Owner Mary Hepworth, who admits the family have previously gone without food themselves on occasion to make sure there is enough for the animals, said just a few pounds could make such a difference to keeping the animals warm and fed this festive season.

She said: “Santa’s reindeers get plenty of carrots, we’re just asking that maybe a few children decide to come and visit us and bring our horses their carrots instead.

“So many horses have been abandoned since the recession hit and it seems to be escalating, so we’re taking as many as we can, but it’s a struggle.

“Anything people can give in terms of a donation would be such a big help to us.”
