Girlguiding Mary receives top award

An inspirational young woman from Sheffield has risen to the challenge to achieve the highest award in Girlguiding.

Mary Snape, leader with 91st Banner Cross Brownies, was presented with her Queen’s Guide Award at the House of Commons recently, by Val Elliott, the Interim Chair of Girlguiding’s Board of Trustees.

To achieve the prestigious award, Mary took on a series of personal challenges in areas such as social action, voluntary work and travel. Fewer than 150 Girlguiding members are presented with the award each year and these have to be completed before they turn 26.

Mary, now aged 26, took two years to finish her challenges. These included walking fifty miles along Hadrian’s Wall, running science experiments for girls and volunteering with Sheffield Marrow, signing people up for bone marrow donation.

Mary said: “As part of my award I organised an event for 150 people, aged from five all the way up to adults. It took a lot of effort to organise, but all the comments were really positive and all the girls had a good time so it was worth it.”

Interim Chair Ms Elliott said: “These inspirational young women should be incredibly proud of their achievements and I’m honoured to present them with their awards. It was a privilege to hear about the challenges they all took on, from developing their skills by organising outdoors expeditions to taking positive action in their communities and further afield. By achieving the Queen’s Guide Award they have shown what can be achieved through dedication and hard work. Congratulations to them all.”
