The event, which marks the first anniversary of MP Jo Cox’s murder, is inspired by her maiden speech in parliament, when she said ‘we all have more in common than that which divides us.’

From street parties and picnics to barbecues and bakes offs, there is all sorts going on. People of all ages and backgrounds will be part of the biggest moment of national unity since the Diamond Jubilee.

Jo’s widow Brendan Cox and adventurer Bear Grylls have both given their support to the initiative.

They said: “It’s this ethos of inclusiveness and togetherness that makes the Scouts such a perfect partner for The Great Get Together.

“It’s a movement that welcomes boys and girls from all walks of life and brings them together to make friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

“Growing up in the Scouts was an incredibly enriching experience for both of us.

“As well as making friends and learning new skills, it exposed us to new ideas and perspectives on the world that we would not otherwise have had.

“Without a doubt, we’re better people for having had the good fortune of being in the Scouts.”
