On Saturday night a crook used the ornament to smash their way into a house in Robin Lane, Beighton.

A handbag and purse were stolen.

Officers are also also investigating a burglary in Charnock Grove, Charnock, where games consoles were stolen after a door lock was removed to gain entry.

Power tools, sports equipment and electrical items were stolen in a raid of a garage in Sheffield Road, Woodhouse and garden furniture was stolen from outside a property in Handsworth Grange Drive, Handsworth.

An attempted burglary of a flat in Spinkhill Road, Richmond, is also under investigation.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Consider what items you leave outside your home as often they can be used by opportunists.

"Place spades, shovels, ladders, crowbars inside garages or sheds to reduce the risk of someone being tempted to use them."
