Heading the event is Joy Johnson, 56, of Hillsyde Avenue, who herself has been battling with the disease.

The first fundraiser, in aid of Cancer Research, was a coffee morning last year which fetched in over £600, it is hoped an event later this month with top that figure.

Joy, a mobile hairdresser, explained that the events were in memory of her sister in law Jayne Johnson, and friends Elaine Aston and Karen Hewitt who had all lost their fight with various forms of cancer.

She said: “The coffee morning last year was a year since my sister in law had passed away, and a friend of hers had died the previous year.

“I thought I would just do something in their memories, and I’ve lost another friend too.”

She added: “I had breast cancer myself in 2008 and I have to be grateful because I’m still here.

People look at it in different ways.

“I’ve been given another six years up to now, you’ve got to get on and do as best you can.”

She went on: “Cancer is in our family, I lost a cousin to it in 2006, her eldest sister got it.

“We are raising money for Cancer Research who deserve people to raise funds for them.

“I’m sure they’re making big breakthroughs.”

This year’s event is a cakes, coffee and crafts day and will take place at Misterton Methodist Chapel on Saturday August 30 between 10.30am-2.30pm.

On offer will be a range of stalls selling handcrafted jewellery, needlework, cards, books, locally-produced honey, knitted toys, cakes, and children’s toys.

There will also be a tombola, face painting, and raffle.

Refreshments will include candy floss, popcorn, hot dogs, bacon sandwiches, fresh cream scones, cakes, and drinks.

“I am desperately trying to find a children’s roundabout for the day but am really struggling,” added Joy.

“If anyone can help please can they contact me?

“Last year we raised over £600 and if we can get that again I would be happy.”

Anyone who can help Joy with her search for a children’s roundabout for the day, or who would like to help out in some other way is asked to contact her by telephoning 01427 891103.
