Fundraiser helps troops

A FUNDRAISING day at a Sheffield pub has raised hundreds of pounds for wounded troops charity Help For Heroes.

The Sportsman, on Redmires Road, Lodge Moor, held the event on Saturday, May 29, which included a football match in which the pub’s team beat Sheffield Assay Office 4-3, plus a bouncy castle, face painting, a Punch and Judy show and barbecue.

In the eventing, there was a raffle and live music from tribute band Mojo.

Landlord Roger Purdy and his wife Margaret added to the fundraising total when they celebrated their Ruby Wedding anniversary at their pub last weekend by asking people to make donations to the appeal rather than give any presents.

Roger said: “We thought at our age, and given the nature of the cause, this was a more sensible suggestion.”

After the donations from the anniversary last Sunday, the total raised for Help For Heroes was £900.
