After falling behind, the Millers recovered to lead 2-1 before being pegged back by the home side.

A strike by Joe Newell and an own goal from Anthony Pilkington saw Rotherham in front early in the second half, but Pilkington restored parity on the hour.

The Millers were second best in the first half but turned round level after Newell pounced just a minute before the break.

He latched on to Danny Ward's lofted ball, rounded home goalkeeper David Marshall and slotted home a classy finish from a tight angle on the left.

The Bluebirds had gone ahead in the 24th minute of an uninspiring first period when the Millers dithered in their own area and Anthony Pilkington showed good control before shooting past Lee Camp from close in.

The game came to life after the interval with both sides having threatening moments.

Rotherham gave a debut to new boy Chris Burke, signed on loan from Nottingham Forest the day before the game. He looked sharp at times and offered good delivery from the right flank.

Striker Luciano Becchio, signed until the end of the season earlier in the week, came on for a second-half cameo.

The spirited visitors did well to hold out in the latter stages, helped by a red card for Cardiff's Lee Peltier for a challenge on Jonson Clarke-Harris in the 85th minute.

Their efforts brought only their fourth point on the road in Redfearn's three-and-a-half-month reign and it was one they deserved.
