Fruit orchard planted by schoolchildren found ruined

A number of fruit trees planted in a Rivelin Valley community space are believed to have been stolen.

Thieves struck at the Holly Hagg Community Growing Project, off Long Lane, taking three trees and damaging two more.

A project spokesman said: “The little orchard was planted by children.

“Each fruit tree has been chosen and nurtured by a child and their family.

“Each sapling has a tiny copper label bearing the evidence of the love and care of its sponsoring child, by way of an inscription.

“We hope the trees have survived and are being cared for somewhere. We ask anyone who comes across a sapling with such a tag to contact us.”
