And forecasters add that there is a 30 per cent chance that Friday could also see the hottest temperature EVER recorded in the British Isles.

The current record stands at 38.5C which was recorded at Faversham in Kent on August 10 2003.

Earlier this week the Met Office issued an alert advising people to stay indoors or in the shade during the middle of the day during the heatwave.

On Friday the highest of the temperatures are likely to be recorded in the south east of England with temperatures in Sheffield expcted to be in the high 20s.

Friday's hot and humid air is set set to also trigger some thunderstorms across Northern England which could lead to flash flooding in places.
