TEN thousand poop scoop bags have been handed out free of charge to promote good dog ownership.
They were provided by Bolsover Council at roadshows held in areas of the north Derbyshire borough known to suffer from dog mess on pavements and in parks.
Cabinet member for the environment, Coun Dennis Kelly said: “Dog fouling is a problem that costs us an absolute fortune to deal with and clean up and money that could be spent elsewhere.
“So we are pleading with the public to clean up or tell us if they see someone who hasn’t, that way we can try and stop this problem.”
A total of 94 dogs were o microchipped, with chips provided free by the Dogs Trust, allowing the council to identify a dog easily if it is found to be straying.
