Freddie's golden double as Sheffield Diving team wins 10 medals at National Cup

Sheffield's Freddie Woodward produced his best individual diving performance in a major competition when he won two gold medals.

He took both the 3 metre and 1 metre springboard titles at the National Cup in Southend.

On the 1 metre springboard Freddie dived consistently well, his best a front 3½ somersault dive in the penultimate round.

Jordan Houlden also achieved one of the best results of his career in winning the bronze medal, with Ross Haslam fourth and Jack Haslam fifth.

Jack Haslam showed great courage in competing, having fractured a thumb just three weeks before the competition.

In the 3 metre springboard preliminary competition Woodward missed his reverse 3½ somersault dive but showed terrific mental strength to perform it brilliantly in the final for 78 points.

Good execution of his other dives took him to a total of 420 points, a personal best. Ross Haslam came fourth, Jordan Houldan fifth and Jack Haslam seventh.

Freddie said: “I missed this competition due to injury last year but my time off has meant that I have been able to put in all the hard work that is necessary for a personal best performance.

“I feel like I am diving better than I have ever done before. It is a really incredible feeling.”

Freddie’s performances won him a place on the British team for the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in February.

Ross Haslam and Houlden teamed up in the 3 metre synchro event to win the gold medal withWoodward and Jack Haslam taking silver.

Ross haslam and Houlden produced a superb front 2½ somersault with two twists dive for 77 points in the final round to secure their victory.

Clare Cryan won an excellent silver medal in the women’s 1 metre springboard competition with Millie Fowler fifth and Millie Haffety eight.

The two Millies then teamed up to win silver medals in the 3 metre synchro event, scoring particularly well with their inward 2½ somersault tuck dive, with Fern Hitchin and Clare Cryan in fourthth place.

Yasmin Harper narrowly missed out on a place in the finals of her two events.

In an outstanding competition for Sheffield Diving the team won a total of 10 medals.
