Frail elderly people were unable to leave their sheltered accommodation for days after the nearby roads and pavements were not cleared of ice.
Pensioners living at Welwyn Court on Jaunty Lane, Base Green, said they could not make it across the road to their local shop because surfaces were like an ‘ice rink’.
Carers also struggled to get through to help those who need support.
Great-grandmother Sadie Turner, aged 81, said: “The car park and road is like a skating rink, we haven’t had a bus for three days and people can’t get to the shop.
“When I called to complain I just couldn’t get through to anyone.”
When The Star contacted the council, a team was sent to clear the area that afternoon.
The council said its area-based estate teams had been operating on a skeleton staff over Christmas and had more to do due to the ‘unexpected severe snowfall’.
A spokesman added: “The team have been out clearing paths and laying grit but could not get around all sites on one day. Welwyn Court was visited and although the area has now been made safer, residents should still take great care when going out in these conditions. A warden is on site and can escalate issues raised.”
