DONCASTER residents are being invited to find out more about fostering at a special information event.

The event, organised by leading charity Action for Children, is calling for more local people to consider fostering, after a shortage of 750 carers in Yorkshire and the Humber was revealed.

Sue Atkinson-Millmoor, children’s placements manager at Action for Children, said: “We are looking for people who have a spare room and experience of caring for, or working with, children to join our team of foster carers in the area.

“Fostering can be a very rewarding career choice.

“At Action for Children, we really value our carers. We offer excellent fees, regular breaks and 24-hour support, as well as ongoing training to enable carers to best meet the needs of the young people they foster.

“I would encourage Doncaster residents who are interested in fostering to book a place and attend our information event – you could change a young person’s life.”

Anyone interested in attending can book a place to meet the Action for Children team, find out about the charity’s fostering programme and ask any questions they may have.

Figures released earlier this year suggest there is a shortage of nearly 9,000 foster families across the UK.

The shortfall means too many children are at risk of not getting the right foster home first time round, which heightens the chances of a fostering breakdown and their return to residential care.

Action for Children works with the UK’s most vulnerable and neglected children and young people who are in care and runs 13 fostering services across the UK.

In 2011, more than 24,000 children came into care and needed fostering - one child every 22 minutes.

The fostering information event takes place on Wednesday, December 5, from 11am to 1pm at The Point, 16 South Parade, Doncaster.
