Former University of Sheffield graduate to be made a dame

Author Hilary Mantel, who studied at the University of Sheffield, is to be made a dame by the Prince of Wales.

The Derbyshire-born 62-year-old writer, whose books about the life of Henry VIII’s adviser Thomas Cromwell have been critical and commercial hits, is to be honoured for services to literature at a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony.

Mantel caused a furore in February 2013 when she suggested the Duchess of Cambridge was a ‘shop-window mannequin’ with no personality, whose only purpose was to breed.
