Former Sheffield Wednesday star John Sheridan is new Oldham manager

Sheridan, who spent five years as a player, then three years as manager of the club between 1998 and 2009, leaves Newport County after just three months, in which time he has taken the Welsh side off the bottom of League Two.

Oldham sacked David Dunn on Tuesday after a run of seven games without a win, with the 36 year old having only won three of his 20 games in charge.

Since leaving Oldham, Sheridan has managed at Chesterfield, Plymouth and Newport.

The 51 year-old told Oldham's website: "Everyone knows how much I love this club. I was here for a long time as both a player and a manager so I’m really chuffed and excited to be back. I feel like I’ve got unfinished business from last time and I’m looking forward to the challenge. It’s a big one, but I’m really excited about it. As soon as the opportunity came, I wanted to get back involved and manage Oldham. I feel one of my strengths is getting teams who are struggling out of the positions they are in.

"We have some good players here, but we just need to win games, and that’s what it’s all about. I’m expecting us to get the results we are after and to climb the table.”

It is expected that Warren Feeney, a one time loanee at Wednesday, will step up from assistant manager at Newport to take charge, at least until the end of the season. The former Northern Ireland international has previous managerial experience in the Northern Irish Premiership with Linfield.
