The 32 year old Liverpudlian has agreed a deal to stay at Prenton Park until the end of the season having had his contract at Bramall Lane cancelled during the January transfer window.

Higdon spent most of this season on loan at Oldham, where he scored five goals in 13 appearances.

The striker was signed by Nigel Clough from Dutch side NEC Nijmegen at the beginning of last season but found it hard to nail down a regular place in the team due to injury, suspension and poor form, with Higdon scoring five goals in 20 appearances.

He played just three league games for United this season before being sent to Oldham.

Tranmere manager Gary Brabin told the club's website: "I’m delighted that we are able to bring such an experienced and talented player as Michael into the squad. He is a local lad who fits the bill of what we’ve been looking for. He has been playing at League One level this season and will offer us a different dimension to the excellent attacking options we already have at our disposal."
