Commenting on why he thought Mr Smith was the right man for the job, he said: "I want a Labour leader who can unite our party and make us a serious alternative government.

"And I want a Labour leader who will reach out to every part of Britain and can do what Labour has done in the past - which is out of this crisis, make it a progressive moment."

Mr Miliband, who stepped down as Labour Leader last May following a crushing General Election defeat, refrained from criticising the party's current leader, Jeremy Corbyn in the video but said he thought Mr Smith had turned vision into a concrete programme.
