A HEALTH project using football to encourage older men to keep fit welcomed a former Barnsley defender to the pitch for a celebration match.

Scott Jones, who played in Barnsley’s defeat against Manchester United in the 1998 FA Cup, played in the game organised by the SportActiv health awareness project.

The initiative was launched to give men aged between 50 and 65 a chance to exercise and socialise together.

The match offered the opportunity for participants to show off the difference exercise has made to their lives and their health to friends, family and spectators.

Funded by the NHS, the scheme is aimed at those at risk of hypertension or heart disease as well as other threatening diseases and the project now has around eighteen regulars who join every week to play five-a-side football.
