With Chinese New Year happening on February 8 there is no better excuse to get stuck in.

Here are 11 top places to dine on noodles and chow mein to mark the Year of the Monkey.

Open since 1985, this restaurant is tucked away down a flight of stairs on The Moor and famed for its bamboozling array of delicate, delicious dim sum dumplings.

The restaurant has evolved from offering dishes like sweet and sour chicken to traditional Cantonese, then on to Schezuan to cater for the many Chinese students and now there are also many Thai dishes.

Pricing is keen and the Chinese/Yorkshire hybrid accents are wonderful.

Regulars rhapsodize about this takeaway - and particularly enjoy the open plan kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work.

Portions are generous and orders ready in mere minutes, giving a whole new meaning to the words fast food.

Crispy chilli beef Cantonese style, chicken satay and the duck are favourites for many.

Transfer from wok to home delivery is speedy, and although there is a wide range of dishes on the menu, some of the more old-fashioned are the best/

Formerly Cubanas, this place is as authentic as it can get.

It was actually Sheffield’s first traditional Malaysian restaurant when it opened in 2014, but offers Chinese, Japanese and Singaporean too.

Some of the odder choices on offer include marinated tripe, spicy frog leg and exploded kidney flower, but for the faint hearted there are more ‘normal’ options too.

Portions are truly gigantic and free prawn crackers standard - take a friend.

Oisoi, St Paul’s Place, city centre

This new concept oriental market-cum-restaurant wants to educate the people of Sheffield about authentic Asian food.

Browse in the Harvey Nichols style market - where they also make fresh dumplings, cakes and dishes to take away - or head upstairs to dine next to the open kitchen.

Its a stylish spot with a tapas-type menu, plus fusion and classic Asian dishes to choose from.

This upmarket spot is favoured for special occasions due to its elegant manor house location and refined dishes - The Star’s former restaurant critic Martin Dawes once described a ‘glorious’ stir-fried monkfish cheeks.

It has loyal customers and a good selection of wines to boot.

A huge menu and heaped plates makes this a popular venue that can be packed at times.

Main courses, paticularly the noodle ones, can easily be shared by two or make for a doggy bag dinner.

The atmosphere is fun and there’s often complimentary ice cream if you can fit it in.
