FOOD: Seven brilliant brunch spots to try in Sheffield

Bacon and fizz, pancakes with coffee - it is easy to see why foodies love brunch.

Sheffield’s thriving independent restaurant scene has embraced the concept, and there are any number of options when it comes to the midday meal.

Here are just seven of the top places to try.

1 - Tamper Sellers Wheel, Arundel Street, city centre

Forget queuing for bread...

Saturday brunch-lovers are so eager to sample the fare at this city centre coffee house, with a New Zealand twist, that they will wait for a table on busy weekends.

It’s worth it, though. The eggs benedict are a thing of beauty with perfect runny yolks and a golden hash brown to boot.

For those who like a little more on their plates, there’s the Big Kiwi instead of a full English. Add in seriously potent coffee, lashings of avocade plus some offbeat and sweet options - you have a mighty fine breakfast. Bookings not taken, so turn up early.

2 - Forge Bakehouse, Abbeydale Road

This drool-worthy picture of French toast at Forge Bakehouse says more than a thousand words. There are three topping options plus pastries for the sweet-toothed and inventive savoury dishes - think curry with eggs, or sweet potato panckes - also. All are made fresh for the Abbeydale Road cafe.

3 - Couch, Ecclesall Road

Take a newspaper and prepare to get comfortable at Couch - a cosy spot with plenty of relaxed seating, quirky decor and an all-round relaxed atmosphere.

Big appetites will be happier here, as the full works often arrive on a tray, with a Mason jar packed with beans, hearty sausages and little extras.

The counter is covered with daily sweet treats including brownies to savour slowly and the people-watching is strong. Commuters can also take heart, as regular filter coffee on weekdays is just £1 until 10am.

4 - Depot Bakery, Kelham Island

Tucked away off Burton Road, across from the venue for the popular Peddler night market is the artisan Depot Bakery- famed for its goodie-laden, creative doughnuts and oh-so-pretty patisserie wonders such as banana bread or bacon and egg pies.

It looks - almost - too good to eat.

5 - The Milestone, Kelham Island

Those who like a champagne lifestyle on lemonade money could do worse than head to gastro haunt The Milestone.

Brunch at £7 per person includes one dish, a glass of fizz and a coffee. Their Hollandaise sauce for egg dishes is butter-soaked decadence and the full English substantial.

6 - Anchorage, West One, city centre

Kimchi pickled cabbage, salt beef and chicken waffles are among the unusual brunch items on the menu at this West One spot, which is inspired by a Jewish deli.

For those in need of a hair of the dog, there’s also four different types of Bloody Mary available - naturally including a dash of Henderson’s Relish.

Bottoms up...

7- Homemade by Thelma’s, Nether Edge

In the heart of arty Nether Edge sits Homemade by Thelma’s, which started life on Sharrowvale Road before relocating to its current, larger premises.
