Kelham Island might be a hot spot for thousands of residents to live, people to work and businesses to thrive, but fresh produce is difficult to buy.

Until now. Community-minded residents and workers are pulling together to organise the area’s first Ball Street Deli Food and Drink Market, where stalls will sell everything from fish to chorizo and bread to bhajis, in the street on Sunday November 27.

“The aim is to get people out, so they can get to know each other, get some good food - because there is only the Tesco Express down here - and local people can get a sense of what’s going on”, said Ben McGarry, chairman of the Kelham Island Community Alliance.

The market will tie in with a host of other activities and projects the alliance is working on, from education on the wildlife that is now flourishing on the River Don, to turning neglected utility boxes into pieces of interactive art.

Faye Read, event co-ordinator, said: “There is a lot going on at the moment in Kelham Island, so it is about showcasing that.”

While the deli is about fresh produce, rather than street food as at the nearby Peddler Market, staff at gastropub The Milestone will also be cooking in the street.

Faye added: “They are going to cook up some simple dishes using produce from the stalls - people can get a meal and also some inspiration on what they can cook themselves.”

There will be several charity stalls at the event.

Local traders are heading there from across the city and include Beanies Wholefoods, fresh meat from Gary’s Butchers, pies and gin from The Broadfield, cheeses from Urban Pantry, wine from Le Bon Vin, Just Preserves, bread and cakes from The Depot bakery, Smith Street Coffee and onion bhajis from Ball Street restaurant The Bhaji Thali Cafe.

The street market is to run from 12- 4pm.

Around the corner, there is progress on the newest destination for S3.

The long-awaited JÖRO, a seasonal eatery inside the shipping container complex Krynkl, is taking bookings for when it opens in December. The menu is also online. For bookings email [email protected].

Head chef Luke French said: “It’s an amazing time of the year to finally be in the home of JÖRO, the team are excited to showcase the restaurant after several months of pop ups honing our dishes.”
