FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Kris Salmon

'‹Kris Salmon works at organic superfoods company Rainforest Foods in Dinnington.

Are you a cook?

I like to think so, although my wife does a lot of the cooking at home! I come from a family with a history in the food business. My older brother is a chef and both of my parents cook well, so I believe I’ve inherited a good palate!

Any cooking tips?

Try coconut oil as a replacement for olive oil. It’s much healthier, smokes at a higher temperature and leaves your kitchen smelling exotically. And don’t be shy with the spices!

What’s your favourite dish?

I love all types of Asian food, so a good curry! Whether that be Thai, Indian, Malaysian, Singaporean; basically anything with a bit of spice and creamy coconutiness! Although I’ve never turned down a good old Sunday roast! A “bobo de camarao” (prawn curry) from Brazil is also worth a try!

And a drink to go with it?

A nice cool, crisp lager!

Your favourite restaurant in the Sheffield area?

I’m a big fan of Cutler’s Spice, just off Norton Road. They do Bangladeshi style curries that are rich and creamy. I’ve never left there dissatisfied! I was recently taken to VeroGusto in town fomy birthday. I would certainly recommend it, but because of the price, only for a special occasion.

And pub?

I’m not much of a drinker, but for food, any of the Milestone pubs. The food has always been of a high standard and very reasonably priced.

What’s the worst meal you’ve ever had?

When I was younger, the family and I ate out at a Frankie and Benny’s. I found a skin-coloured plaster in my burger; actually concealed within the meat patty! I’ve haven’t been back to one since.

And the best?

I’m lucky enough to have had many great meals! The best was probably during my honeymoon in Zanzibar. It was 8 courses of some of the most luxurious and fresh ingredients I’ve ever had.

Just a shame that I won’t be going back there anytime soon.

Your favourite TV cook?

I am a distant relative of Nigella Lawson, so I guess I have a bias towards her. Otherwise, Rick Stein. I love his passion for food and how he enjoys trying and experimenting with foods from all cultures, whilst keeping things relatively simple.

What do you think of Sheffield as a place to eat out?

There are always new restaurants appearing here; you’re never stuck for somewhere new to go.

And there’s a great variety, so overall I think Sheffield is great for eating out.
