The role food banks play in helping families get to pay day has been praised by a Sheffield councillor.

Coun Helen Mirfin-Boukouris visited New Hope food bank on Rotherham Close, Killamarsh, with Sarah Cullen, chair of the South East Sheffield constituency.

She was given a tour of the site, which delivers food to those in need within a six-mile radius.

Coun Mirfin-Boukouris said: “A lot of thought and effort goes into preparing these food packages for people ensuring that each family’s members needs are considered.

“Both Sarah and I felt moved to tears to hear some of the stories staff relayed to us.

“It’s good to know that the food we donated will really help people who are in desperate times.
