Fond memories of Pollards

Have your say

I WAS sorry to read in your paper about the demise of Pollard’s shop and am sure that if premises could have been acquired a little nearer the centre of town it would have remained the popular venue it once was.

I remember the shop at the top of Fitzwilliam Street/corner of Glossop Road, which, I believe, is now Nirmal’s Indian restaurant.

Mr Pollard would be serving in his pristine white apron, always polite. If I requested sugar, he would have to descend through a trap door at the back of the counter to fetch my order from the cellar.

I loved the huge red, black and gold tea canisters which were always on a high shelf at the back of the counter. Pollard’s then had many customers from the west end of Sheffield and, indeed, it was a pleasure to shop there.

Sadly we have entered a different era.
