Follow-up piece please

There are many options which were not considered as alternatives to destaffing our library in Stannington, such as getting the Parish Council to raise funds via a special levy (which I am sure most Stannington residents would have been more than happy to pay in order to retain the librarians).

I am also concerned that the press (for example, The Star’s recent article “use them or lose them”) seem to be simply “towing the party line” so to speak, with volunteer libraries seen as the only option.

With this article in particular, where were the questions to Jack Scott, the cabinet member responsible, on how can you borrow £180 million to fund an already failed regeneration project yet not things we actually need like librarians?

And how can Coun Scott get away with not holding a full public debate into the issue when the policy has clearly failed?

Where were the views of the opposition parties such as the Lib Dems, Greens and UKIP, offering their alternative views and visions for our much-cherished library service?

I do not doubt The Star’s good intentions in the tone and views put forth in the article and it is to be commended for giving this issue the coverage it deserves.

So, dear Editor, thanks for the “use them or lose them” article on Sheffield’s library service.

Please, could we have a follow-up piece with the opposition parties, library users and staff putting forward their views?
