A man is paying the price for fly-tipping in Barnsley - after being landed with an £824 bill.

Darren Cooper, aged 31, of Milgate Street, Royston, pleaded guilty to breaching the Environmental Protection Act by dumping an exhaust and fridge freezer on Laithes Lane, Athersley.

Barnsley magistrates heard that Mr Copper had hired a van and was intending to take the items to a tip, but was turned away because of the height of the vehicle.

A passenger unloaded the items in a lay-by, but Mr Cooper accepted joint enterprise.

He was fined £293 plus £362.64 investigation costs, £70 clean-up costs, £70 legal costs and a £29 victim surcharge.
