Floral tributes left at scene of fatal tram collision in Sheffield

Martin Rigg, aged 37, suffered life threatening injuries in a collision with a tram on West Street, close to Convent Walk, one week ago today.

He was rushed to hospital but lost his fight for life in the early hours of Sunday.

A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is under way, with Mr Rigg reported to have been involved in an argument with two other men just moments before he was struck by a tram.

The two men have not yet been traced.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision at 10.20pm on Wednesday, May 22 and when paramedics arrived they found that a number of passers-by had stopped to offer first aid to Mr Rigg as he lay unconscious on the ground.

One of the Good Samaritans was former Sheffield Mayor Magid Magid.

Among the tributes left at the crash scene is a card which reads: “My brother, my shadow, half of me has gone with you.”

Another describes Mr Rigg as ‘an amazing uncle’.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer said: “It is reported that shortly before the collision Mr Rigg was seen to be having an argument with two unknown men. We need to find out who these men are and would like to speak to anybody who witnessed this conversation.

“We’re working hard to establish the facts of what happened in the moments before this incident occurred.”
