RESIDENTS of homes on a large private housing estate below a former pit tip fear removal of coal from the site will increase the risk of flooding to their houses.

More than 50 residents from the Cowley Lane estate in Chapeltown expressed their fears at a meeting of Ecclesfield Parish Council’s planning committee.

Private firm RecyCoal is applying for permission to remove nearly 400,000 tonnes of coal from Hesley Wood tip and restore the 50 hectare site as a recreational area.

The company said it will create settling ponds for rain water to prevent flooding of the surrounding area.
