Flood alerts have been issued in Sheffield as Storm Christoph threatens to wreak havoc in parts of the country over the next few days.

An amber weather warning for heavy rain was issued by the Met Office yesterday, starting at 6am today and lasting until around midday on Thursday.

The Met Office said ‘heavy rainfall combined with some snowmelt across the hills is likely to lead to flooding’.

It added: “Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings

“Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life.”

It said delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely, there could be road closures, communities could be cut off and there could be power cuts and a loss of other services to homes and businesses.

Five flood alerts have been issued for the Sheffield region – for Blackburn Brook, Middle River Don, River Sheaf and Porter Brook, Upper Derwent in Derbyshire and the Upper River Don catchment.
