Fletcher joins West Ham as Barnsley bew boy Payne scores in 2-0 friendly win at Guiseley

Manchester United's Ashley Fletcher, one of the Barnsley stars last season, has joined Premier League West Ham.

The England Under-20 international, who helped the Tykes win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and promotion from Sky Bet League One via the play-offs, spent the second half of last season at Oakwell. He has signed a four-year deal with the Hammers.

Meanwhile new signing Stefan Payne last night lived up to his pledge to hit the ground running in pre-season, scoring the second goal in the 2-0 friendly win at Guiseley.

The striker, who bagged 18 goals in 45 appearances as he led Dover Athletic to the National League play-offs last season, linked well with fellow new boy Kayden Jackson.

James Carvell had scored the first at the National League side after a brilliant ball by Adam Hammill.

It was Payne’s eye for goal and blistering pace that attracted the attention of the Reds.

The 24-year-old knows a few goals in pre-season would put him right in Paul Heckingbottom’s thoughts for the start of the Championship campaign: “As a striker you always want to score goals,” said Payne, who penned a two-year deal with the Reds with an option for an extra year.

“In the first few games if you can get a few goals the confidence comes from there.

“If I score a few who knows what will happen, it’s in the gaffer’s hands come the start of the season.”

Despite being only 24, Barnsley is Payne’s 11th different club. But the former Gillingham man believes he can make Oakwell his home for years to come.

“I was a bit younger when I was going from club to club. I was still learning new things, learning things about myself back then,” added Payne, who top scored during both his seasons at the Whites.

“I think it’s time to settle down here and learn some more and who knows what’s going to happen here.”

Barnsley announced the signings of young duo Elliot Kebbie and Dylan Mottley-Henry yesterday. They will join the development squad after signing six-month deals and are the sixth and seventh new additions to the club - alongside George Moncur, Elliot Lee, Andy Yiadom, Jackson and Payne.

Kebbie, 21, learned his craft at the Leeds United Academy and has since spent time at Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Mottley-Henry has recently been on trial at the club after being released by Bradford City at the end of last season.
