ACADEMICS from Sheffield University have highlighted flaws in the Government’s flagship energy efficiency scheme.

Experts found residents in deprived communities in Yorkshire have doubts about the Green Deal after holding a series of focus groups in towns across the region.

The policy aims to reduce carbon emissions and fuel poverty.

Initial costs of any improvements are paid for with a loan from the Green Deal Finance Company then paid off through savings to their fuel bills.

But groups revealed raised concerns over the financing of the scheme.

Professor Lenny Koh, who led the project, said: “It is an important scheme to help people to keep their home warm and afford access to energy.”
