Firefighters and police officers were called to Aldi on Littlefield Road, Dinnington, this morning after staff discovered the shop had been broken into at around 1.25am, with entry gained via the ceiling air duct system.
It was thought the offender was still in the roof, resulting in a thorough search of the roof space lasting around five hours - which revealed there was no-one there.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Following reports of a man inside a supermarket roof in Dinnington this morning, a thorough search has been conducted and police can confirm that there is no one in the roof.
“After receiving a call at about 8.55am, emergency services attended the supermarket in Littlefield Road. Engineers searched the roof and are now satisfied that there is no one there.
“At about 1.25am this morning, it was reported that the shop had been broken into and entry had been gained via the ceiling air duct system.
“Officers attended and searched the area but the offender was not located.
“Enquiries into the matter are ongoing and anyone with information regarding the burglary is asked to phone 101 quoting incident number 39 of 1 June 2016.”
