Five British figure skating golds for Sheffield

Five skaters based in Sheffield took home gold at the British Figure Skating Championships at iceSheffield.

First places went to Emily Hayward, Lauren Lowry with Branden Marshall and Alice Gavin with Dominic Barter.

The annual competition saw 222 skaters from across the UK, aged between seven and the late 20s, descend on Sheffield to compete for national glory.

The event attracts an array of talent, from basic through to senior, and among those were British elite couple Chris Boyadji and Amani Fancy, and Olympians Nicholas Buckland and Penny Coomes.

Skating against 23 other skaters and with tough competition from Scotlands’ Lana Bagen, Emily who skated to victory and claimed the Junior National Champion title, with an overall score of 116.32.

The second win for Sheffield was from Lauren and Branden who competed within Advanced Novice Pairs. Their overall score was 38.66 and the win will no doubt motivate them throughout the rest of the 2015-16 ice skating season.

The Sheffield hat-trick came from Alice and Gavin, who placed 1st within Basic Novice Dance with an overall score of 54.61.

It was the second time the young pair have competed at the Nationals and they are hopeful that it is the start of a successful skating career.

After her win, Emily said; “I cannot believe I am thechampion!

“It hasn’t yet sunk in and I’m still trying to decide where to put my trophy. I’ve been working so hard for this moment and could not be happier.”
